The Right Way Round is a practice workbook for children who are learning to write letters and numbers the right way round, in the right order, and with the right value in the right place. The child traces, copies, writes from memory, writes from dictation, puts letters and numbers in order, and says out loud how they know.

Reversing letters and numbers, or writing digits in the wrong order, is common in the early stages of learning to write. For most children it resolves naturally with time and practice. This workbook offers that practice, arranged as a progression.

What is inside

64 exercises in eight groups:

1. Letter and Number Formation. Start point, stroke order and direction, for the letters and numerals children most often form incorrectly. 9 exercises.
2. Mirror Letters. First b, d, p and q, which share a shape and turn into each other. Then letters such as e, s, g, j and z. 8 exercises.
3. Mirror Numbers. The seven numerals that reverse most often: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9, alone and inside two-digit numbers. 8 exercises.
4. Letter Order. Words built from the same letters in different sequences, such as was and saw, pot and top. 8 exercises.
5. Tens and Ones. Place value, what each digit stands for, and why the order changes the value. 8 exercises.
6. Number Order. Numbers built from the same digits in different sequences, such as 42 and 24, 61 and 16. 8 exercises.
7. Hearing and Writing Numbers. Numbers written from dictation, with the adult read-aloud panels supplied. 8 exercises.
8. Mixed Practice. Letters, numbers, words and place value mixed within single pages. 7 exercises.

How it works

• Every exercise carries a record strip: Done, Fixed, Score, and Time where it applies. Fixed records how many answers the child corrected without help.
• Each group opens with a first try, repeats that exercise later with the same items and space for both scores, and closes with a challenge against the clock.
• A short code in each page footer records what the task asks for and what it practises.
• A cover card at the back covers models and read-aloud panels where an exercise needs them.
• Most exercises can be done without an adult. The ones that need one are marked.
